A Simple Mineral-Rich Addition to Your Daily Routine
Sole water (pronounced “so-lay,” from the Latin sol for salt) is a fully saturated salt-and-water solution, most commonly made with unrefined salt like pink Himalayan salt.
What Is Sole Water?
Sole water is a fully saturated salt solution — meaning the water has absorbed as much salt as it physically can. That saturation point works out to roughly 26% salt by weight, similar in concentration to seawater. That’s the real distinction between sole and just stirring a pinch of salt into your glass: sole gives you a fixed, repeatable concentration every time.
How to make it:
Fill a glass jar about a quarter of the way with an unrefined salt — pink Himalayan, Redmond Real Salt, Baja Gold Mineral Sea Salt or Celtic Sea salt (or a mix).
Add filtered water, leaving about an inch of room at the top.
Cover with a non-metal lid and shake gently.
Leave it on the counter overnight.
Check the next day: if a bit of undissolved salt remains at the bottom, the water is fully saturated and your sole is ready. If all the salt dissolved, add more and repeat until some settles at the bottom — that’s your sign it’s saturated.
To drink it, mix about one teaspoon to one tablespoon of the brine into a full glass of water.
Does the salt type matter?
Unrefined salts like Himalayan, Redmond, Baja Gold and Celtic Sea salt do contain trace minerals — magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron — that heavily processed table salt largely lacks, since refining strips many of them out and some brands add anti-caking agents.
How Sodium and Electrolytes Actually Work
Fluid balance. Sodium is the primary electrolyte controlling how much water stays inside versus outside your cells, via osmosis. This is why sodium intake affects blood volume and blood pressure directly — more sodium pulls more water into your bloodstream.
Nerve and muscle function. Sodium ions are essential for the electrical signals that trigger nerve impulses and muscle contractions, including your heartbeat. This is the real basis for concerns about both too little sodium and too much.
Sweat losses. Sweat contains sodium, potassium, and chloride, roughly in that order of concentration. Heavy, prolonged sweating (endurance exercise, hot climates, certain medical conditions) can deplete sodium enough to cause symptoms like cramping, dizziness, or fatigue.
